Saturday, July 31: HAITI 5:00 p.m. – Music
Buyu Ambroise was born in Port-au-Prince. After a brief stay in the Republic of Congo as a child, he has resided in the U.S. for over 35 years.
He experimented with the saxophone as a high school student in Brooklyn, and his passion for jazz led him to study with legendary musicians Frank Foster, Jimmy Owens and John Lewis.
Buyu has performed in New York City for more than 20 years. On his CDs Blues in Red (2004) & Marasa (2006), he draws from the folkloric repertoire of Haitian music and the African roots of Haitian music and American Jazz. Buyu’s combination of traditional Afro-Haitian beats and improvisational grooves take after those of jazz greats John Coltrane and Wayne Shorter. Buyu’s melodies are inspired from the rich repertoire of Afro-Haitian music and sustained with modern jazz harmonies.
